About Beth Cohen

I started Conversations that Matter originally at my workplace to help staff on my nursing unit feel more capable of having difficult conversations with patients and families. There was not much time dedicated in nursing school to end of life care, or even how to talk to people about these topics. It is not something you can learn from a book but something you have to practice in the real world. So we started with typical scenarios, even our own patients, and applied the latest evidence from nursing in our practice sessions with each other and then eventually families.

This is my father as a child with his parents. Family has always been at the center of my life and my work. Today, I help patients and their loved ones navigate difficult healthcare decisions while honoring each person's values and wishes.

My Approach

My goal is to listen to individuals and families first. Everyone has something important to say, each in their own way. Hearing each other out and helping each other see the many ways to look at a situation in order to gain understanding and show compassion are paramount to showing respect for each person’s values. I help by providing education taking into account the patient’s values and preferences for any decision-making and discussions surrounding care.
